When hundreds of thousands of
Christians around the world remain locked in their homes, technology comes to
rescue them.
Mount
Athos, a peninsula in northern Greece and the spiritual heart of the Eastern
Orthodox Church, also known as the "Garden of the Virgin Mary", will
be closed to pilgrims this year for Christmas. The Greek government has
extended until January 10 a strict lockdown due to coronavirus - schools, cafes
and restaurants, courts, entertainment facilities, ski centers will be closed
But thanks
to virtual reality technology, from now on, everyone in any corner of the
planet, can make a trip to the Holy Mount Athos. Everyone can do it at any time
with the VR Pilgrim app, which was launched in June 2020 and has been already
loved by many users.
The
unique app is available in Greek, English, Russian and languages for devices
based on Android and iOS platforms. VR Pilgrim opens an access to the most
remote corners of the Christian world, offering virtual travels to Athos,
Meteora, Lebanon and Italy. The treasures of the Christian world are collected
in one app and are available for visit. Most of the funds received from the
subscription are going to support and restore the monasteriesat this difficult
time.
“There has always been a
tradition in Orthodoxy to visit holy places. The beauty and spiritual power of
such places enriches anyone, gives happiness and harmony - that natural state,
which we often forget about, plunging into worldly vanity and worries. The
Covid-19 pandemic has radically changed our lives. But in such difficult
moments of changes we can see the true values of people, their impulses,
desires, everything that is deeply hidden inside each of us. And at such
moments it is very important to keep peace, tranquility and faith in the soul.
VR Pilgrim is more than a virtual travel app, it is an opportunity to discover
yourself and find that spiritual comfort that we lack» says Georgy Tsatsanidis,
representative of VR Treasures, creator of the VR Pilgrim app.
The monastic state of Athos is the second most important religious place of pilgrimage after Jerusalem for more than 300 million Orthodox Christians around the world. Any adult man (or young people under the age of 18 accompanied by their father) can visit the Holy Mountain, regardless of faith or nationality, having received a special permit - Demetrion. Nowadays, there are 20 monasteries on Mount Athos. Every year on Christmas Eve, many pilgrims are flocking to the Holy Mountain to celebrate these days in the same way as wascelebrating for many centuries, starting from Byzantine times.
