Agreement envisages launching of the flights by the Hungarian low-cost airline from Kutaisi Airport to 12 new destinations, which include Frankfurt, Hamburg, Baden-Baden, Poznan, Venice, Naples, Nice, Pisa, Stockholm, Nuremberg, Heraklion and Turku.
Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development noted that seven direct flights from the Kutaisi International Airport will be launched by the end of the year while the rest of the flights will be performed since the summer of 2020.
“This is a unique opportunity to receive additional European tourists. It is especially interesting that for the first time we will have direct flights to and from Finland and Sweden. As you know, there is a growing interest towards visiting Georgia in Scandinavia and, therefore, we will be able to get tourists from these countries. This is the result of several intensive negotiations that have been successfully completed,” – Natia Turnava said.
Turnava also said that Georgia’s tourism policy is aimed at turning the country into a more attractive tourist destination, which is equally pleasurable for European tourists as well as for the tourists from traditional markets.
Director of the United Airports of Georgia of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Giorgi Chogovadze and Logistic Director of Hungarian low-cost airline, the Wizz Air, András Sebok signed the Agreement on new flight directions.
In the Kutaisi Davit Aghmashenebeli International Airport the company Wizz Air adds the fourth and the fifth AIRBUS A 320 type modern aircrafts for the permanent deployment. Since the end of 2019, the forth deployed aircraft will perform regular flights to 7 new destinations - Poznan, Hamburg, Naples, Venice, Pisa, Frankfurt and Baden-Baden. Since the summer of 2020 Kutaisi International Airport will offer other five new European routes to Europe and these destinations are Stockholm, Nuremberg, Turku, Nice and Heraklion.
Wizz Air started operating in the Kutaisi International Airport in 2012. In September 2016, Wizz Air’s first aircraft was deployed at the Kutaisi International Airport. In May 2017, the second aircraft was deployed, which also brought five most demanded routs to Europe. In 2018, Wizz Air transported 95% of Kutaisi International Airport passengers (587 643 passengers), which made the Wizz Air the leader in the Georgian aviation market for the first time.
