The creators of the new application VR Pilgrim
managed to receive a blessing and preserve in virtual reality the unique
temples and churches of Lebanon that were damaged after the tragedy.
Half of the city is in the ruins as a result of a powerful explosion in
the port of Beirut. Many people died and were injured. Some of the roads are
blocked. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes. In Achrafieh, one of
the oldest Christian district of Beirut, several churches of the Patriarchate
of Antioch were damaged, particularly the Church of the Great Martyr Demetrius and the Cathedralof St.
Nicholas.
In June 2020VR Treasures team launched the VR Pilgrim app which allows
you to make a virtual pilgrimage to the shrines of Christendom. A year ago, VR
Treasures team visited Lebanon to film its unique churches, monasteries and
temples in virtual reality.
Georgios Tsatsanidis, Director of Development of VR Treasures, said: “On behalf of VR Treasures, I express my deepest condolences to the Lebanese people. I can’t even begin to describe the feelings when I see photos and videos sent by Lebanese friends. A year ago we were in Lebanon, and were fascinated by the beauty and hospitality of this country. With sadness and pain I look at what is left of Beirut now. According to legend, Beirut had been reborn seven times from the ashes, which made it a city-phoenix. I am sure that this time the city will be able to rise from the ashes again and become even more beautiful. Through the metropolitans we will try to support the victims. An impressive part of the funds received from subscriptions in the VR Pilgrim app will be sent to rebuild temples. Thus, we can help our Lebanese brothersby joint efforts”.
