Family members play a major role in providing care giving assistance to the elderly with limited abilities, patients with chronicle illnesses and disabilities. The family members of people affected by an illness causing dependency on external assistance face various problems—financial, emotional, interpersonal relationships, social relationships—affecting the caregiver's day-to-day activities, health and occupation. The families need information, support, knowledge and specific suggestions for coping with everyday problems. While providing care they may experience considerable amount of distress and may have a poor quality of life, if they are unable to cope with the stress associated with the process of care giving.
“Family Member Support” sub-project was launched last week within the frames of Caritas Georgia Home Care project. A small group of relatives, which take care of their beloved at home spent several days in the mountain resort Sairme in Western Georgia. The social worker and psychologist of the project, which accompanied the group created friendly and relaxing atmosphere bringing about a desired social and personal change. But the best remedy for the emotional effects from caregiving was fresh air and beautiful mountain scenery.
Communication with this “Team” will continue in Tbilisi in the format of the “Support group meetings” to provide them more information about the self-care to prevent the burnout effect, the illness, develop skills to cope with problems at home, activate the counter-stress system and learn methods of caregiving to deal with the ill person.
During a year three groups of family members will participate in this project.
