The Georgian Foreign Minister has held a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary General

The Georgian Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani held a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, which was preceded by the discussion of the situation with the Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE and the High Representative of the EU as organizations co-chairing the Geneva Process.
David Zalkaliani provided the UN Secretary General with information on the situation in Georgia’s occupied regions. Special attention was paid to the difficult human rights situation on the ground, recent developments across the occupation line, including the illegal erection of artificial barriers and detentions. Conversation also included the so-called presidential elections held on 25 August in occupied Abkhazia.
The Minister reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to de-escalation of the situation and peaceful resolution of the conflict, as well as to constructive and consistent participation in the Geneva International Discussions. With respect to the recent developments across the occupation line, the sides highlighted the importance of discussing the issue within the margins of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism and the Geneva International Discussions.
In this light, the sides welcomed the decision of the UN Representative to the Geneva International Discussions to arrive in Georgia to explore the situation on the ground.
The Foreign Minister thanked the UN Secretary General for his support of Georgia and active engagement on the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The sides underscored the importance of keeping Georgia high on the UN agenda to prevent destructive processes from developing and to avoid further escalation of the situation. António Guterres reconfirmed his support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
